The mission of the Leavenworth County Juvenile Detention Center is to enhance community safety by providing and operating a safe and secure holding facility for juvenile offenders. The Center is committed to providing structure, and appropriate services to all county youth that transition through the justice system.
The primary function of the Center is to assess the proper placement of juvenile offenders that are arrested or summoned by law enforcement agencies through the juvenile intake and assessment; and to process and hold juvenile offenders that have active criminal warrants, have committed new offenses, or are court ordered holds for sanctions or commitments to other facilities. The Center uses the Kansas Detention Assessment Instrument (KDAI) to make guided determinations of the placement of the juvenile being processed. The Center only detains juveniles that have committed a criminal offense. At no time are non-offenders detained at the Juvenile Detention Center.
The Center also processes and releases youth placed into Police Protective Custody (PPC). Youth placed into PPC are held in a non-secure portion of the Center until they can be released to temporary foster placements that are approved by Law Enforcement, Department of Children and Families (DCF), or the County Attorney's Office.
